Steps Used to Expertly Clean Oriental and Area Rugs
- Pre-Inspect. The condition of each rug is assessed. First, we look for fading, discoloration, stains, wear, pre-existing damage, color instability and odors. Next, we determine the ability to clean each rug and the appropriate cleaning procedure to be used. (See note below).
- Dusting. Foot traffic and dry soil can act like sandpaper on the fiber. Dust and particulate matter lying deep within the rug are removed using compressed air and specially designed tools. This step is often referred to as “air washing” or “dusting” of the rug. Vacuuming, shaking, or beating of the rugs are not nearly as effective.
Pre-Treat. Spots, spills and stains are treated using the most advanced spotting techniques and chemicals.
- Clean. Traffic and heavily soiled areas are worked on using specially designed equipment. This involves a process of agitating, dissolving, suspending and extracting the ground in soils. (Unfortunately, discoloration due to wear, fading, or chemical reactions not reversible.)
Rinse. This further removes soil and cleaning residue helping to restore the natural feel).
Restore. The nap is combed with special grooming tools.
Dry. The rugs are dried in our climate controlled drying room. Drying time depends on the rug and the conditions, and we give you an estimate.
*NOTE: During step #1, pre-inspection – we may determine that additional steps beyond standard cleaning are necessary to restore your rug to its best possible appearance. Unusually heavily soiled rugs, excessive spotting, by-hand cleaning, deodorization, and situations that require extra labor or materials may require an additional charge.

How each rug is treated differently
A hand-knotted wool rug, a silk rug and a machine-made synthetic rug do not clean the same way. Dyes, fibers, age and construction all change what is safe. That is why we inspect each rug before choosing a method. A rug that is cleaned the wrong way can bleed, shrink or lose its texture, so we look first and clean second.

What dirt does inside a rug
The visible surface is only part of the story. Fine soil settles deep at the base of the pile, where it cuts the fibers each time someone walks on the rug. Pet accidents, spills and humid air add odors and stains. Dusting and washing a rug properly removes that hidden soil, which helps the rug last longer and look brighter.
Pickup, delivery and in-home options

Stains, odors and fading
Common rug problems include pet urine, food and drink stains, and sun fading. Some stains lift easily and others do not. We check for color stability first, because some dyes can bleed when wet. If a rug is not safe to clean fully, we tell you before we begin and talk through your options.
Caring for your rug between cleanings
Vacuum both sides of the rug regularly, and rotate it every few months so it wears evenly. Blot spills right away, and keep direct sun and moisture away from the fibers. A rug pad underneath protects the rug and your floor. Plan a professional cleaning every year or two, depending on traffic and pets.
