Wellington began as the Flying Cow Ranch. Charles Oliver Wellington, a Massachusetts accountant, bought 18,000 acres of swampland in the 1950s. He was an aviator, and the C.O.W. in the name came from his initials. Farmers later grew strawberries there, and the area became a planned community.
